The ability to speak in English does not have to be perfect just as a native speaker. In fact, there are a lot more non-native speakers of English than native when it comes to holding a conversation. Besides, it is unrealistic if we set our language learning goals to native speakers in the sense that their accent is affected by our mother tongue and grammatical complexity in the language while someone is talking or writing.
I thought of different goal setting is required to fulfill the need for my current condition; to start a conversation, to listen to others' stories, and to say my opinion on the topic based on my own experiences. That being said, I don`t need to speak English all the time. I have been trying to speak and write using English as much as I could to maintain or improve these very skills.
I was joining a conversation through Tandem, an online platform to provides us with a chance to chat or speak in a group setting or having a ring between 2 people. I was surprised how I was able to manage to speak without fear during the talks. I joined a group started by Indonesians, so I do not get judged by others on how poor I am when I speak English. I was looking someone that understood how hard it is to speak in a foreign language.
I even met a woman from Poland, who going to marry an Indonesian man after having their first regardless of the fact they have not been met in person before. This opened my eyes to some other possibility to visit a different part of the world and keep learning about different cultures and the ways they think. I also had a chance to talk to an Indonesian who is responsible for managing a grocery store and expanding his business to start a parking lot. He had a bunch of experiences that were made by how he was living in the past, tackling some of the challenges to overcome his financial household condition. Despite these challenges, he has grown up and become a good business entrepreneur helping his mom to manage the store, having enough confidence and courage to meet a lot of new people as well as the potential to start a business.
Content and meaningful messages are not always overrated or to say the least, should be placed over language fact. It is not necessarily true if you have been learning English in a course or as a part of the school curriculum. As we have been through, lack fluency and confidence to speak in English. There must be a cause for this result which is not easy to recognize because there was not some of the education practice who have written much and are aware to solve this issue.
There is no need to get frustrated or be stressed due to the lack of quality in English education. In Japan, the government introduced a system that allows students to learn from an English teacher who comes from abroad. As a result, learning a language by how we teach adults to learn a language is a drawback we can learn. Native speakers or English instructors might play an important role but children can not learn the way just like adults. The content and needs have to be designed so that children will actively participate in the classroom such as discussing whether to agree upon a task or when playing with their peers. This activity provided the lesson based on their age or was supposed to be granted at school considering their age. As they grow, schools have to choose and design the curriculum carefully, so they do not end up providing some lessons that they were not required nor appropriate for their age.
